Let the Games Begin, Cardinal Sins and Kerr Cover

The Commonwealth Games are underway in Birmingham, England’s second largest city. The 2022 edition will feature over 5,000 athletes from 72 nations competing, with over 1,800 medals to be awarded over the two weeks of competition. These Games will feature 283 different medal events across a wide range of sports, including 3 new entries – Women’s T20 Cricket, 3X3 Basketball and 3X3 Wheelchair Basketball. And for the first time, there are more women’s events than men’s.

These are also the first Games to pilot Esports, which will have separate medal events.

The sport of lawn tennis was invented in the host city, although tennis itself has not featured in the Commonwealth Games since Delhi in 2010. As it stands, Anastasia Rodionova is the reigning Commonwealth Games women’s singles champion.

With locals affectionately known as “Brummies”, Birmingham is home to Cadbury, canals and, most famously, heavy metal. Black Sabbath is the city’s most famous metal export, while Robert Plante of Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Death by napalm and Flesh of God all come from the city on the Rea river.

This presents a golden opportunity for Black Sabbath’s ‘Iron Man’ to pop out of the speakers during the triathlon, and if reports are to be believed, the water they’ll be swimming in is far from pure. They will most likely need an iron constitution to get through the grueling course.

It’s been quite a week for Sam Northeast. The Glamorgan batter scored 410* in his side’s win over Leicestershire in the England County Championship.

Northeast is only the 11th individual to score over 400 in first-class cricket (ranked 9th overall), and his 410* is the highest score of the 21st century. His innings feature 45 fours and three sixes, and he managed to clear the rope to elevate his quadruple century.

Residents of the Sunshine Coast may know of his talents, Northeast having spent time handling willow for the Sunshine Coast Burners. While in Queensland, Northeast played 32 games, scored 1169 runs at a solid average of 44.96 with three centuries and the highest tally of 144.

In one of the most bizarre contract terms in professional sports, the Arizona Cardinals quarterback by Kyler Murray the recently signed contract extension requires him to study film four hours a week during the season to comply with the new agreement.

According to the contract, Murray will have to study “the equipment provided to him by the club in order to prepare for the club’s next upcoming match”.

Murray will receive “credit” for completing his film study.

What about team meetings, you ask? Well no. The “independent addendum” indicates that they do not count as homework. Additionally, he is required to “personally study the material provided in good faith”, which means there is no TV, phone or iPad to distract him.

The addendum starts this season and lasts until 2028. Murray better not blame the dog lest he miss out on his $230 million contract. Still, it’s a better incentive than ice cream to finish your chores. We’re all familiar with weight goals and alcohol bans, but homework?

The Cardinals have lost four of their last five regular season games in 2021, and in a New York Times profile in December of that year, Murray admitted he hasn’t spent much time in the movie theater . Well, that’s one way to fix that, especially since Murray is now the second-highest paid quarterback by annual salary.

Clearly, the Cardinals’ management haven’t sought the advice of the former Australian cricket manager mickeyarthurwho knows a thing or two about the risks of assigning homework to elite athletes.

But if you’re looking for a contract that was truly written for the athlete, look no further than the 1970s Hall of Fame pitcher. Rollie fingers, he of the famous waxed handlebar mustache. Fingers had a $100 mustache wax allowance written into his contract. Money well spent by the Oakland A’s.

In a week when seven Manly NRL players decided to boycott a Pride sweater, Australia Sam Kerr becomes the first queer woman and the first queer player to feature on global coverage of EA Sports’ FIFA soccer game, which launched on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Western Australian appears on the cover of FIFA 23 alongside the Paris St-Germain and France striker Kylian Mbappe.

Kerr came out in August 2021 with an Instagram post confirming her relationship with an American football player Kristie Mewis.

Although originally known as the British Empire Games, this will only be the third time that England has hosted the event (1934, London; 2002, Manchester). Australia is leading the way, having hosted the games on five occasionsthe most recent being Gold Coast in 2018. The next edition will be held in regional Victoria.

“I totally respect their point of view, but there needs to be a conversation. We need to sit down and talk to each other civilly” – former Manly Sea Eagles enforcer and first and only openly gay rugby league player Ian Roberton the seven Manly players who refused to wear the Pride shirt.
